What to Expect

Here's what patients can generally expect before, during, and after the procedure: 

Before the Procedure:

1. Initial Consultation:

 -Comprehensive Evaluation: The process begins with a detailed consultation with your dentist or oral surgeon. This includes a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, and gums, as well as a review of your medical history. 

- Imaging and Diagnostics: Advanced imaging techniques, such as X-rays and 3D cone beam CT scans, are used to assess bone density and jaw structure and determine the optimal placement for the implants. 

- Treatment Planning: A personalized treatment plan is developed based on the evaluation. This plan outlines the steps, timeline, and expected outcomes. Your dentist will also discuss sedation options and pain management strategies. 

- Pre-Surgical Instructions: Patients receive detailed instructions on the following before surgery. This may include guidelines on eating and drinking, medications, and oral hygiene practices. 

2. Preparations:

- Dental Impressions: Impressions of your teeth and gums may be taken to create custom prosthetic teeth. 

- Medical Clearance: If you have underlying health conditions, you may need clearance from your primary care physician to ensure you’re fit for surgery.

 - Lifestyle Adjustments: Smokers may be advised to quit smoking before the procedure, as smoking can interfere with healing and the success of the implants. 

 During the Procedure: 

1. Anesthesia and Sedation:

- Local Anesthesia: The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the treatment area. For additional comfort, sedation options such as IV sedation or general anesthesia may be offered, depending on your needs and the complexity of the procedure. 

2. Tooth Extractions (if necessary):

 - Removal of Damaged Teeth: If you have any remaining teeth in the arch being treated, they will be extracted at the beginning of the procedure. 

3. Implant Placement: 

- Strategic Implant Placement: Four dental implants are strategically placed in the jawbone. 

The two front implants are placed vertically, while the two back implants are placed at an angle to maximize bone contact and support.

 - Attachment of Temporary Prosthesis: Once the implants are in place, a temporary prosthetic arch is attached. This allows you to leave the dental office with a functional set of teeth on the same day.

4. Procedure Duration:

 - Time in Surgery: The entire procedure typically takes 2 to 4 hours per arch, depending on the complexity of the case and whether both the upper and lower arches are being treated. 

After the Procedure:

1. Immediate Recovery:

- Post-Operative Care:  After the surgery, you’ll receive detailed post-operative care instructions. This includes guidelines on managing pain, swelling, and bleeding. Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications can help manage discomfort. 

- Dietary Restrictions: You’ll need to stick to a soft food diet for the first few weeks to avoid putting too much pressure on the new implants. Foods like soups, smoothies, and mashed potatoes are recommended.

- Oral Hygiene: Gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution is recommended to keep the surgical sites clean. Brushing should be done carefully around the implants and temporary prostheses. 

2. Healing and Osseointegration:

 - Osseointegration Period: Over the next 3 to 6 months, the implants will undergo osseointegration, where they fuse with the jawbone. This process is crucial for the long-term stability of the implants.

 - Follow-Up Visits: You’ll have several follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure the implants are integrating properly. Any necessary adjustments to the temporary prosthesis will be made during this time.
